The world today is awash with Big Data. In 2016, mankind produced as much information as was created in all previous years of human civilization. Every time we send a message, make a call or complete a transaction, we leave digital traces. We are quickly approaching what Italian writer Italo Calvino presciently called the “memory of the world”: a full digital copy of our physical universe. Big Data means a better knowledge of the urban environment. If open, Big Data can be transformed into responses by citizens and government, helping promote behavioral change and civic engagement. The contribution from Prof. Carlo Ratti will address these issues, from a critical point of view, through projects by the Senseable City Laboratory, a research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the design practice Carlo Ratti Associati.
