The climate crisis requires a fundamental re-evaluation of architectural paradigms. Both the way we design as well as the materials employed in construction contribute to further the “human-made” transformation of the global climate. In a paired set of seminars in the Spring Semester 2024 – The Climate Adaptation Lab and the Material Transition Lab – students of the final Bachelor year learn how architectural design directly, through form and materiality, and indirectly, through embodied energy and emissions, affect our current and future climate conditions. The two seminars enable the students to develop a multi-scalar ecological approach through an analytical and critical attitude. “Sustainability” in architecture is not understood as a predetermined formula but as an ongoing series of collective socio-cultural practices that students must actively embrace as future architects and global citizens.
