BLOCK & COURTYARD
The projects that form this exhibition are part of a year -long investigation into the manner in which type can generate an urban and architectural response.
In this instance Studio Sergison at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio, Switzerland worked in Berlin and in vestigated how block and courtyard types can be employed to repair the existing urban fabric.
The intent is not driven by nostalgia, but rather by a desire to study older housing solutions and their relevance for addressing contemporary needs.
A number of sites were selected in the neighbourhood of Moabit all of which offer the opportunity to add to and complete existing damaged urban blocks.
The students in vestigated strategies for developing sites by using courtyard buildings, with an emphasis on normative, predominantly housing programmes .
